  • Irregular weather patterns have already started showing results. As the globe has been warming up rapidly causing different extreme weather phenomenon, the importance of weather forecasting cannot be emphasized enough. The APEC Research Center for Typhoon and Society (ACTS) held its annual APEC Typhoon Symposium (APTS) along with Student Poster Competition at the GIS NTU Convention Center in Taipei City from May 24 to May 25. The symposium gathered around 280 representatives and participants from 14 member economies and 2 European countries to discuss the applications of weather forecasting to minimize the possibility of disasters.

After the 2-day meeting schedule, the ACTS held a field study visiting the Yuanshantze Flood Diversion Project, which belongs to the 10th River Basin Management Bureau. The Director and Deputy Director of the 10th River Basin Management Bureau received delegates and presented information on how the flood diversion helps to prevent the lower part of the Keelung River basin from flooding.

All the delegates also had a chance to enjoy their lunch at the gold mining town – Jiufen, in New Taipei City. They then headed to the National Museum of Marine Sciences and Technology to better understand Taiwan’s marine science development and education.
