  • Adverse impacts of extreme weather events such as typhoons, storms and heavy rain have caused enormous suffering including loss of life, the disruption of livelihoods and economic activities, and the degradation of the environment in the APEC region. They also negatively affected progress towards development in a number of key areas including agriculture and food security, public health, disaster risk management and water resources management.
Addressing these challenges requires a strategic approach integrating a comprehensive set of tested tools including disaster risk management, risk transfer, and financial inclusion, in innovative ways.  The aim of this training workshop is the following
    • To introduce and share experience on the implementation of the innovative disaster risk management tools
    • To empower key stakeholders to support their communities and/or organizations in developing disaster resilient programs and projects. A number of selected issues will also be discussed with regards to ensuring the resiliency of the societies. Among these issues are:
    • How to increase the knowledge and understanding of risks from extreme- weather-related impacts?
    • How to improve our preparedness and resilience to manage weather-related extreme events?
    • What are the emerging integrated solutions to reduce the risk impact of weather-related extreme events?
    • What are the needs for preparedness and implementation of monitoring and early warning systems for risks from weather-related extreme events?
Since the establishment of APEC Research Center for Typhoon and Society (ACTS) on 22 November, 2010 in Taipei, the Center has been organizing training workshops to enhance the Member Economies capacity in managing typhoon and heavy rain events.
Via education and workshops, all these efforts will be disseminated into APEC Member Economies who are the immediate responders to weather risks. The targeted participants are:

    • Government officials
    • Practitioners and experts who are interested in or are responsible for managing weather-related risks
